The City Council of La Porte City, Iowa met in regular session on March 11, 2013.  Mayor Rick Lubben called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM with Council Members Todd Butler, Sarah Craft and Kim Ortiz present. The Council discussed the recent bequest to the Museum by Alice Janss. Janss left the Museum $261,000 in unrestricted, undesignated funds in her Estate.  Council members agreed it would not be prudent to invest the entire bequest into the fund the Museum Board has designated as an “endowment”.  Council members felt that a portion of the funds should be left in a Capital Improvement Fund for the museum, a portion to general museum expenses, with the remaining funds going to the museum endowment. The Council will schedule a meeting with representatives of the Museum Board prior to the next Council meeting to discuss allocation of the bequest from Alice Janss’ Estate before the Council makes a final decision regarding those funds at the next Council meeting.
