General Information

Membership on all appointive boards, commissions, committees or councils of the City of La Porte City is open to residents of the community and surrounding area as set forth in the requirements of the individual bodies.

Information on membership, terms and duties of appointive boards, commissions, committees or councils of the City of La Porte City will be available at City Hall and on the City’s website, www.laportecityia.com.

Appointments and Reappointments

Appointments and reappointments to all appointive boards, commissions, committees or councils of the City of La Porte City are made by the Mayor or Council as set forth in the requirements of the individual bodies.

Not less than 90 days before the expiration of the term of the member of any appointive board, commission, committee or council of the City of La Porte City, the City Clerk or designee shall:

·         Post notice of the opening at City Hall and on the City’s website for a period of at least 90 days.  The posting shall include a description of the duties required, length of term for the position and application information.

·         Cause notice of the opening to be published in The Progress Review not less than three times within the same 90 day period.

·         Provide information either verbally or in writing to all interested candidates.

Citizens requesting appointment to any appointive board, commission, committee or council of the City of La Porte City shall submit a letter of interest or completed application to City Hall, 202 Main Street, La Porte City, IA 50651.

After the 90 day notification period, and not more than 30 days after the expiration of the term of a member of any appointive board, commission, committee or council of the City of La Porte City, the City Clerk or designee shall

·         Place notice of appointment on the City Council agenda for deliberation.

·         Provide copies of all applications and letters of interest to the Mayor and Council for consideration.

In the event no suitable candidates are identified for appointment, the City Clerk or designee shall continue to post the opening at City Hall until a suitable candidate is appointed.
